Laboratory of Mass

The Laboratory of Mass is one of the oldest DPM laboratories due to the fact that mass is one of the basic physical quantities and mass measurements are necessary in every sector of industry. The key activities of the mass laboratory are ensuring traceability of measurements to international level for the physical unit of mass and the dissemination of the unit of mass to the lowest level, the end users.

The key activities of the laboratory of mass are:

  • Preservation and maintenance of the Kilogram unit of mass in the Republic of Albania;
  • Ensuring traceability of measurements to international level for the Kilogram physical unit of mass and dissemination of the unit of mass to a lowest level up to end users;
  • Participation in inter-laboratory comparisons at international and regional levels for the CMC declaration, at Class E2 level, remains one of the strategic objectives of the laboratory of mass.

Activities:

–    Calibration of standard weights in the ranges of 1 mg – 10 kg Class E1  with calibration certificate and uncertainty according to OIML R111-2004 Recommendation , with calibration certificate of CIPM-MRA, according to the CMC declaration in BIPM;

–    Calibration of standard weights in the ranges of 1 mg – 20 kg Class  E2  with calibration certificate and uncertainty according to OIML R111-2004 Recommendation , with calibration certificate of CIPM-MRA, according to the CMC declaration in BIPM;

–    Calibration of standard weights in the ranges of 1 mg – 20 kg Class F1, with calibration certificate accredited by the General Directorate of Accreditation No: LK 001 14.05.2009.

–    Calibration of Non-Automatic Weighing Instruments, NAWI, up to the range of 100 kg according to:  EURAMET – cg/18 – v4 – 2012 Guide, with calibration certificate accredited by the General Directorate of Accreditation No: LK 001 14.05.2009.

The measurement capabilities for the calibration of weights of class E2 internationally validated and recognised through KCDB of BIPM inter-laboratory comparison, in the context of EURAMET M.M-K2.2 and M.M-K4.2 project, in which this laboratory has declared the calibration and measurement capabilities (CMCs) are described in the following table.

Laboratory of Mass – Traceability

The 1 kg mass national standard of the Republic of Albania is part of the 1 mg – 10 kg Set, Class E1 of stainless steel material, traceable to the International System of Units SI, through the calibration performed in the National Institute of Metrology of Germany (PTB) in October 2011.
The national standard is preserved and held in the Laboratory of Mass in DPM and is used as primary standard to ensure the traceability of measurement result at national level, through the calibrations that laboratory makes to meet the needs and to ensure the reliability of measurements at lower level and at the national system of measurements, as well as industry. This is presented in the traceability scheme of the Laboratory of Mass.

 

Working standards of Class E2 ensure traceability for accredited laboratories and for those laboratories which use analytical balances or mass comparators of primary service, healthcare, food, veterinary, industrial environment, etc.
Class E2 standards are traceable to the Class E1 primary standard through calibration in the laboratory of mass, in compliance with CMC declaration in BIPM.

Equipments:
The Laboratory of mass has all necessary equipment to provide traceability of weights in the ranges: 1 mg – 10 kg Class E1, 1 mg – 50 kg Class E2, 1 mg – 50 kg Class F1 and analytical balances up to the range of 100 kg.
